ORIGIN
Dave East is an American rapper signed to Mass Appeal Records and Def Jam Recordings. His discography includes the mixtapes Hate Me Now (2015), Kairi Chanel (2016), and the EP Paranoia: A True Story (2017). He was named to the XXL Freshman Class of 2016. East was born David Brewster, Jr. on June 3, 1988, in New York City. He grew up in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. East attended Springbrook High School in Maryland. He studied at the University of Richmond before transferring to Towson University. He played basketball at the varsity and college levels. He also played in the Amateur Athletic Union with future superstar Kevin Durant.

CAREER
East’s debut mixtape, Change of Plans, was released in July 2010. It was hosted by DJ Ill Will & DJ Rockstar. He followed up with Insomnia (2011), American Greed (2011), Don’t Sleep (2011), and No Regrets (2012). His 6th tape, Gemini (2012), caught the attention of Nas who quickly signed him to his label Mass Appeal Records. Two more mixtapes followed, Black Rose (2014) and Straight Outta Harlem (2014). East’s 9th mixtape, Hate Me Now (2015), featured guests artists like Pusha T, Rico Love, Styles P, and Jadakiss.

In June 2016, East was 1 of 10 rappers named to the XXL Freshman Class. The others include G Herbo, Lil Dicky, Anderson Paak and Lil Uzi Vert. His 10th mixtape, Kairi Chanel, was released later in 2016. It peaked at #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The 15-tracked tape featured Cam’ron on the track “S.D.E.” and 2 Chainz on the track “Can’t Ignore”. East signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2016. His debut EP, Paranoia: A True Story, was released in August 2017 by Def Jam and Mass Appeal. It charted at #9 on the Billboard 200. The EP featured guest verses from Nas, Jeezy, French Montana and Wiz Khalifa. The lead single “Perfect” features Chris Brown.

In addition to music, East has some experience as an actor. His television debut was in a 2017 episode of the BET drama series ‘Being Mary Jane’. He starred in a 2017 commercial for Puma’s Tsugi Shinsei men’s training shoes. He appeared in Straight Stuntin Chronicles (Vol. 2 & Vol. 5). He was also featured in rapper Trina’s 2017 music video for “It Ain’t Me”. East appeared on the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards cypher. He served as host of the 2017 Goldie Awards in New York City.
